Why the Church of Christ?

10/27/2025

In our last article we asked, “How do you know your church is the right one?” The Bible gives us a clear standard. Let’s take it a step further. Why do we believe the church of Christ is the correct church?

It Wears the Biblical Name

Paul wrote, “The churches of Christ greet you” (Rom 16:16 ESV). We do not take on the names of men, movements, or councils. We simply wear the name that honors Christ, the one who purchased the church with His own blood (Acts 20:28).

It Follows the New Testament Pattern

When you read the book of Acts, you see believers worshipping with singing (Eph 5:19), praying (Acts 2:42), teaching God’s word (Acts 20:7), giving on the first day of the week (1 Cor 16:1–2), and observing the Lord’s Supper each Lord’s Day (Acts 20:7). That is what the church of Christ still does today—no more and no less.

It Teaches the Same Gospel

The first-century gospel was not “faith only,” nor was it “works alone.” It was the call to believe in Christ (John 3:16), repent of sins (Acts 17:30), confess Christ (Matt 10:32; Rom 10:9–10), and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). That is still the message faithfully preached in the church of Christ.

It Stands for Unity in Truth

Jesus prayed “that they may all be one” (John 17:21 ESV). Denominations divide, but Christ’s church is united on one faith, one baptism, and one body (Eph 4:4–5). The only way to achieve true unity is to return to the Bible alone as our authority.

Conclusion

We are not claiming to be better than others. We are not a denomination or just “one church among many.” We are striving to be the very church you read about in the New Testament—the church Jesus promised to build (Matt 16:18).

If that sounds simple, it’s because it is. The Lord’s way has always been clear: hear His word, obey His gospel, and walk in His steps. That is what it means to be the church of Christ.
